Kilkenny School of Irish Dance is excited to announce that we are again part of the Betovering Festival (International Art Festival for Children). Come and try some Irish Dancing during the Festival in the autumn break!
Irish Dancing became known in the Netherlands after the Riverdance show during the Eurovision Songfestival in 1994, but Irish Dancing itself goes back many centuries and can be done in many different forms and styles. Most important is the footwork, which is often amazingly fast. And at the same time you have to try and keep your upper body and arms straight! During this workshop you’ll be introduced to a number of styles with the so-called ‘soft shoe’ and ‘hard shoe (a kind of tap dance shoe), there will be demo’s and you’ll get a chance to learn a few basic dance steps yourself. Please check the program at Workshop dans: Ierse Dans – Kilkenny School of Irish Dance | De Betovering and register for one of the Irish Dance workshops on Wednesday 20 October and Thursday 21 October 2021. You can register by sending an email to chairdeksid@gmail.com, indicating for which day you would like to register, or by filling in the contact form.
Kom Iers dansen tijdens festival De Betovering!
This year’s ‘Gluren bij de Buren’ festival took place on Sunday 5th of September. It was outdoors, and the performance of the Kilkenny Dancers was hosted by Stadstuin Emma’s Hof in The Hague. It was a gorgeous day full of sunshine, and some of the audience were so impressed by the Kilkenny Dancers that they stayed for all three sessions!
Kilkenny School of Irish Dance have just compiled a series of 8 instructional videos whereby the dancers along with their teacher Sean Kilkenny TCRG will guide you through, step by step, the basics of Irish dancing. The videos are aimed to get you dancing in the comfort and safety of your own home during this present Corona pandemic and they are designed for both young and old to give you an insight into this lively aspect of Irish culture. These videos were made with the support of the CultuurSchakel (Geld voor je Kunst!)
We encourage you all to give it a try and when you get one or more of the dances under your belt you can send us a video where you will come in with a chance of getting a 6 week block of free lessons in our studio here in The Hague or online if this does not suit. You can forward your videos to chairdeksid@gmail.com before July 15 2021.
Check out our first instruction video on Chairde KSID Youtube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHmCTPBcxnE&t=19s). More videos to follow. From all at the Kilkenny School of Irish Dance, we wish you all hours of pleasure and fun in attempting to master your first steps.
“It’s never too late to learn”
This year’s Embassy Festival was an online festival. Like previous years, the Kilkenny School of Irish Dance was asked to participate, and the performance was filmed by the filmmakers of the Embassy Festival in front of the Hofvijver and Binnenhof in The Hague. Please check out the performance on the Festival’s website.
We were also featured in the ‘Haagsche Courant’ newspaper!
What a year it has been! No competitions, no live performances, limited indoor classes… Nevertheless the Kilkenny Irish Dancers kept on dancing, at home, via Zoom, in the park or on the streets in the city center!
The KSID dancers came together while social distancing at home, for a virtual performance on King’s Day. Many thanks to Laura Lundy for the choreography and to Aiobhin Quinn for editing. Music credit: Yvonne Fahy – Isolation.
